Bad Hair Styling Habits….and How to Reverse Them

Your blow dryer, flat iron, and curling iron can make your hair look great, but too much heat while styling can cause hair to break, thin out and eventually cause permanent damage. While we should be treating our locks delicately and with plenty of TLC – many of us are harming our hair while styling without even knowing it.

Don’t Double Up On Styling Tools – If you blow out your hair and then flat iron or curl it, you’re doing twice as much damage. Learn how to create the texture you want with a blow dryer alone. Different brushes can help create a straight or wavy look. Or use a heat-free styling technique, like braiding while wet and letting it dry into waves.

Buy Good ToolsMost cheaper hot tools only have one setting – these include blow dryers, flat irons and curling irons. You should look for tools with different heat settings and/or that display the temperature.  Professional tools from a beauty supply store typically will have the best tools! Choose dryers with a nozzle attachment to target air flow and a diffuser to help distribute heat more evenly. When you select a heat setting on your dryer or curling or straight iron, consider the thickness of your hair. The finer the hair, the lower the temperature,

Protect your Hair from the Heat – There are hair products made to protect your hair from the heat. A leave-in conditioner is always important! To protect your hair while styling, work quickly, don’t leave the heat on each section longer than three or four seconds.
